David Taplin

David Taplin as The Watcher
David Taplin has written the script of Rooms The Movie and played "The Watcher" - the main character of the film.

Recently I've had a chat with David about the film,  the script, the watcher and the production...

David Taplin and the script
"Well, it all started with this very unusual gentleman called Mateo, who used to be my neighbour in Venezuela, we talked a lot about films, writing, television and stuff...he moved to London, I didn't really see much of him and then early this year he phoned me up to say that he had a great idea for a film, would I be interested in writing it? I haven't seen Mateo in a long time so I thought: I'll go and have a drink with him anyway! We sat there in a bar, he pitched me the idea and I thought it was fantastic: 3 South Americans living in rooms in the same building in London!"

David also said that Mateo wanted an English character to bind everybody's story together:  "..we  talked about Hitchcock's film Real Window - which is a favourite of mine, it is about a guy that has a telescope, a broken leg and nothing to do so he just spies his neighbours..." then the story of The Watcher came around, but what he was not expecting was that Mateo wanted him to play it in the film...the bad man but the hero as well!
David Taplin and Angelita Jimenez

"...during the filming, a couple of times, I stopped, I thought, this is weird, this all came out of my head, these interesting, amazing, beautiful people speaking my words..." said David Taplin.

Quechua ritual by Sofia Buchuck

Yesterday, Sofia Buchuck has done the Quechua ritual in one of the scenes of Rooms The Movie. We've asked her: what is a Quechua ritual?
"The Quechua Ritual to Pachamama comes from the Inka culture in Peru. This ritual is to pay respect to mother earth as she is the provider of everything in this world: life, food and future. We thank her but also we reconnect with her to know more about the misteries of life, she will answer our worries and help us to find solutions."
Sofia Buchuck is a poet and singer born in Cusco- Peru. Her work, both musically and literary, reflects issues of Diaspora, memory and celebrates the popular and ancestral culture of Latin America. She has travelled across Latin America learning the culture and traditions of that continent. She also speaks Quechua which she has learnt from her indigenous grand mother.

With a BA in Spanish and Latin American studies, Sofia Cuchuck has just finished an MA in Hispanics and cultural studies, and an MA in oral history. She has studied singing at the national music school of Mexico UNAM and completed a research in ethnomusicology during 2003. In London, Sofia has completed a diploma in Latin American poetry at the Birbeck University College.
